reciting in prayers

The Quran states quite clearly that we have to recite our prayers with moderate voice, not whispering and not shouting. It is apparently sunna to do the two middle prayers silent and the others loud. I have never understood on what grounds my wife takes the right to do all five prayers a day silent.
